In good news, ‘Post-war girlhoods: Jill Craigie, British social realism and local stardom’ has recently been published in Screen (vol. 63 Issue I Spring 2022)
Hollie’s article draws on archival research she completed as part of the project and explores the foregrounding of young women in Craigie’s 1946 documentary The Way We Live and her only feature film Blue Scar (1949).
It highlights how the depictions of postwar girlhood in these films were shaped both by Craigie’s participatory work with regional and industrial working-class communities and by popular, aspirational narratives of film stardom.
